Finding a Racquet that Fits Your Game

Aggressive Baseliners

Purpose

Hitting punishing ground strokes from the baseline rather than finishing points at the net.

What to Use

Racquets with mid-sized head frames and weight either evenly distributed or slightly head-heavy are appropriate for this kind of player. Aggressive baseliners either have long, loopy strokes or short, efficient ones which allow them to hit the ball early and on the rise.

Types and Preferences

  • Long, loopy strokes: Thin-framed, maneuverable, mid-sized racquets that are evenly balanced or slightly head-light
  • Short, efficient strokes: Stiffer racquets with evenly balanced frames

Counterpunchers

Purpose

To win matches with fast feet, shot selection, and defense.

What to Use

Racquets with mid-sized or over-sized heads that are evenly balanced or slightly head-heavy.

Types and Preferences

  • Medium, loopy strokes: Stiffer racquets, evenly balanced or slightly head-heavy, with a mid-sized or over-sized frame
  • Short, efficient strokes: Stiffer racquets with evenly balanced frames or slightly head-heavy, with mid-sized or over-sized frames

Serve and Volleyers

Purpose

To get to the net as quickly, and as often, as possible, and force opponents to continually pass them under pressure. Hitting heavy spin serves allows more time to get into the net.

What to Use

Racquets that move easily through the air for those lightning-quick volleys. Thin-framed, maneuverable, mid-sized racquets that are evenly balanced or slightly head-light.

All-Court Players

Purpose

To win points from the baseline or at the net. Strong baseline shots put opponents in trouble and allow attack on the first short ball. Capitolize on finishing at the net.

What to Use

Racquets that move easily through the air for those lightning-quick volleys. Thin-framed, maneuverable, mid-sized racquets that are evenly balanced or slightly head-light.

Types and Preferences

  • Volley players: a slightly head-light frame for quick-stabs
  • Groundstroke players: a slightly head-heavy frame delivers punishing strokes
